Licence activities

Non-remote bingo operating licence

This licence allows you to provide facilities for playing bingo games at licensed bingo premises, or in clubs and premises with alcohol licences, and where the bingo games are played on the same site.

You will need a bingo operating licence if you offer bingo at a club or working men’s institute or premises with an alcohol licence and you provide high turnover bingo (that is where the aggregate stakes or the aggregate of prizes for bingo played at a club in any period of seven days exceeds £2,000).

If you hold a bingo premises licence you will be allowed to offer Category B3 or B4 (not B3A) gaming machines alongside any number of Category C or D gaming machines. No more than 20 percent of the total number of gaming machines on the bingo premises can be of Category B3 or B4.

If you apply for one of these licences you can also apply for linked licences if you intend to maintain the gaming machines on your premises yourself, or intend to maintain the gambling software used in connection with the electronic bingo terminals yourself.

Ancillary activities

If you are applying for a non-remote bingo operating licence and also want to offer bingo on the premises by means of electronic bingo terminals that link to live games (and which therefore use remote communication), you will need to also apply for an ancillary remote licence.

With the exception of the restricted circumstances as stated previously, any other provision of facilities for remote gambling on bingo premises will require a remote bingo operating licence.

For example, we do not consider that providing software to customers in licensed bingo premises, which the customers download onto their own devices to participate in remote gambling, falls within the scope of the bingo ancillary licence provided for by the Fees Regulations.

Ancillary remote application fee: £100
There is no annual fee for the bingo ancillary operating licence.
