Gambling Commission joins forces with Citizens Advice

13 November 2017

The Gambling Commission will be participating at the Citizens Advice Annual Conference in Manchester today as part of a drive to tackle gambling related harm.

Commission representatives will join forces with Citizens Advice Newport to raise awareness of gambling related harm with frontline advice agencies, and the role they can play in helping to make gambling fairer and safer.

The workshop will cover a number of areas including the prevalence of gambling, how to recognise vulnerable groups and how to support clients with gambling problems.

Gambling Commission executive director Tim Miller said: “Our research suggests that more than two million people are at-risk or classed as problem gamblers, with very many more impacted by the wider consequences of gambling-related harm.

“Citizens Advice is often the first place people turn for help when they need help and support. By working together the Gambling Commission and Citizens Advice can help ensure that advisers are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to respond to the impacts that gambling can sometimes have.”

In addition to running a workshop Commission colleagues will be on hand throughout the conference to offer information to the 1,000 delegates expected at this year’s event.

Katie Fry, Citizens Advice Gambling Support Service Project Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be at the conference alongside colleagues from the Gambling Commission, the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board and GambleAware. This gives us the opportunity to continue working collaboratively to raise awareness of gambling harm with the Citizens Advice network.

“With funding from GambleAware we have developed a variety of tools to help identify and offer advice to people at risk of gambling related harm and we are looking forward to show casing these at the conference and hearing from colleagues on how these could be developed further.”
