Timeline of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain
This timeline tracks the development of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) from consultation in 2020, to its launch as our source of official statistics on gambling behaviours in 2023 and its latest outputs and developments.

July 2025
We hosted the first GSGB Statistics User Group meeting.
We published our response to the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) review.

June 2025
We invited stakeholders to join our new GSGB statistics user group which has been established to inform the continued development of the GSGB.

May 2025
We published the Year 2 (2024) Wave 4 official statistics on gambling participation, covering the period September 2024 to January 2025.
The OSR published their report: Review of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (opens in new tab).
We published findings of new research exploring people’s experiences of gambling consequences. This was the first time the recontact function of the GSGB was used to follow up with survey respondents to ask them to take part in qualitative research.

We hosted a webinar to explain how we are implementing experimental research building on the recommendations from Professor Sturgis’ independent review (opens in new tab) of the GSGB.

March 2025
Our blog post published on International Women’s Day explores findings from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain to better understand how women participate in gambling, and what the consequences (both positive and negative) look like for them.

February 2025
We published the Year 2 (2024) Wave 3 official statistics on gambling participation, covering the period July 2024 to October 2024
The second deep dive report from the GSGB is published, exploring the relationship between gambling activities and Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores.
We published updated guidance on using official statistics from the GSGB to make the information clearer and provide more examples.
We also published a log of requested corrections.

January 2025
Data collection began on new questions in the GSGB developed in collaboration with the Bingo Association. The questions will give better insight into participation in Bingo and validate findings against industry data.
We published the first of two deep dive reports building on data and findings from the GSGB. This report investigates the relationship between reasons for gambling and different gambling activities.

We published the Year 2 (2024) Wave 2 official statistics on gambling participation,covering the period April 2024 to July 2024.

We published the Year 2 (2024) Wave 1 official statistics on gambling participation,covering the period January 2024 to April 2024.

We published the first Annual Report of the GSGB.
We also published Guidance on using statistics from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain.

We published the second wave of official statistics on gambling participation from the GSGB.

We published a blog about our work to improve our understanding of gambling-related harm and vulnerability, through the development of new questions which form part of the GSGB.

February 2024
We published the first wave of official statistics on gambling participation from the GSGB.
We removed the ‘in development’ label from our official statistics on gambling behaviours collected via the GSGB. We published a paper to explain why we have removed the ‘in development’ label from the statistics.
An independent review of the GSGB has been published by Professor Patrick Sturgis from the London School of Economics.
We also published a news article about the report, Independent assessment endorses Gambling Survey for Great Britain.

November 2023
We also published qualitative research to support the development of new survey questions to understand gambling-related harm.
We published a blog on the Gambling Survey for Great Britain Experimental data release.

We started the fieldwork for the official statistics. Fieldwork will last until end of October 2023, with results published Spring 2024.
We hosted three engagement panel workshops with academics, representatives from industry and those with lived experience to provide stakeholders with an update on the project and discuss next steps.

We published a blog about measuring the prevalence of problem gambling. The blog discusses the measurement of problem gambling rates and our approach to this going forward.

We published a report written by NatCen which outlines the findings from the experimental statistics phase to date.
We published a blog summarising the findings we shared with stakeholders at the Evidence Conference about the experimental report and the feedback that stakeholders gave us. -

We published a blog announcing the start of the experimental statistics phase. The blog describes what we'll be doing in the experimental stage of the project.
We published an update on the additional work commissioned to develop survey questions on gambling-related harm. -
May 2022
We held three engagement panel workshops with academics, representatives from industry and those with lived experience to share the findings from the pilot survey.
We published the pilot report to evaluate the impact of the methodology.
We published a blog summarising the findings from the pilot survey and outlining our next steps in the project. -

We announced that we have appointed NatCen Social Research and University of Glasgow to lead the pilot phase of the methodology pilot.
