ABSG publishes advice to Gambling Commission on online harms

The Advisory Board for Safer Gambling has today published its advice to the Gambling Commission on reducing online harms.
This was developed in response to the UK Government’s consultation in April 2019, which set out wide ranging and ambitious plans for improving online safety for its citizens. ABSG welcomes this focus, and recommends that gambling related harms are explicitly recognized in the work that follows from the White Paper. We call for more robust regulation, more investment in effective prevention and education activities, and greater transparency from operators and service providers. We endorse the Government’s proposals for a statutory duty of care for online service providers.
Dr Anna van der Gaag, Chair of ABSG: “The ease of gambling has increased significantly in recent years. Individuals can access gambling sites on their smartphones any time and any place where they have access to the internet. We address three specific concerns about online gambling and gambling-like activities and gambling’s growing association with e-sports, all of which have implications for children, young people and those vulnerable to harm.”
