Promoting and sharing best practice at the Institute of Regulation

As part of our commitment to deliver world-leading regulation, we are proud to be one of the founding members of the Institute of Regulation - the first ever professional body for regulators in the United Kingdom (UK).

In September last year, the newly formed Institute of Regulation (IoR), backed by a variety of UK regulators, government departments, and other organisations from the public and private sectors, was officially founded.

The IoR brings together a close community of regulators to drive a variety of benefits. It shares best practice and research with members, develops common ground for training, apprenticeships and qualifications, and when more fully established, will provide members with a cohesive voice on cross-cutting issues.

The value of the Institute of Regulation

Although only a year old, the IoR has 40 corporate members, mostly UK-based non-financial regulators, with connections on an international scale, particularly with the G-REG network of New Zealand regulators and the regulatory community in Australia. The institute is also working in partnership with the Centre for the Analysis of Risk and Regulation at the London School of Economics, and with the Government’s Regulatory Horizon’s Council, which has welcomed the Institute’s establishment.

Joining the IoR will help us deliver our commitment to innovation, and to evolving our regulatory approach to meet the demands of the gambling industry – a sector which is moving faster than ever. The IoR is already providing us with access to cutting-edge research, idea-sharing forums, sector experts, a professionalised network and opportunities for us to share our own insights.

Over time, we expect that the IoR will become a rich resource for the talent and tools needed to bolster and support our regulatory aims. We are excited about the opportunities IoR offers its members and look forward to engaging with a wide range of regulatory experts that share our goal of delivering highly effective outcome-based regulation.

The IoR was co-founded by Marcial Boo, who is also the Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. He is clear that the IoR’s goal is to support regulators and play a role in regulatory effectiveness in the UK.
