Gambling Survey for Great Britain - updates and upcoming activities

The Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) project team has had an exceptionally busy summer, with a number of updates to share.

OSR review of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain

We received the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) review of the GSGB in May and at the end of July we published our full response. Our response outlines the actions we have already taken based on their recommendations and those we are planning to take.

One of the recommendations was about strengthening user engagement amongst our statistics users. We held our first GSGB Statistics User Group meeting, which just over 50 people attended, on 29 July. The first meeting focused on establishing our community of users – setting expectations, explaining the purpose of the group and getting feedback on how the user group would like to be involved in the GSGB. We also used the opportunity to talk about the publication of the second annual report and get some input into how we develop our outputs.

Experimental research on survey methodology

On 14 August, findings from experimental work undertaken by the London School of Economics and NatCen in relation to the GSGB was published. This work was carried out in response to the recommendations made in Professor Sturgis’ independent review of the GSGB, which was published back in February 2024.

The research focused on the impact of the methodological change in the way the official statistics on gambling behaviours are collected, in particular focusing on topic salience, social desirability bias and the impact of updating the gambling activity list in the survey to better reflect the online activities people now engage in. This research has given us much greater clarity on the implications of the methodological changes. As a result, we will be updating the accompanying guidance for the GSGB statistics.

Preparations for the Second Annual Report of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain

We are also busy preparing for the launch of the Second Annual Report of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain based on data collected during 2024. The report will be published on 2 October 2025 and we’ll be hosting a webinar on the day for anyone interested in hearing the latest findings. Feedback from the GSGB Statistics User Group is being incorporated into the publication, particularly around the data held within the Power Bi dashboard.

Given the extensive data collected through the GSGB, two supplementary reports will be released alongside the official statistics on 2 October, offering a deeper exploration of the findings. One of these reports will focus specifically on people who gamble more frequently, that is those who reported gambling at least weekly in the past four weeks. The other will look more closely at the profile of people who told us they had experienced negative consequences of gambling.

The raw data from Year 2 (2024) will be archived to the UK Data Service in early 2026.

If you are interested in joining the GSGB statistics user group please complete the GSGB Statistics User Group Sign Up form. If you would like to give us feedback in writing we have a GSGB feedback form.
