Commission supports police action targeting illegal gambling activity

The Gambling Commission has supported South Yorkshire Police in a coordinated operation targeting illegal gambling and suspected organised criminal activity in Sheffield and Doncaster.
The action, carried out on 4 and 5 August as part of Operation Duxford and Operation Snaresbrook, saw officers execute warrants at venues suspected of involvement in illegal gambling and money laundering. Sixteen illegal betting terminals were discovered, alongside cash and gold, and three people were arrested.
The operation brought together the Gambling Commission, South Yorkshire Police, the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, local authorities and Immigration Enforcement.
Illegal gambling operators operate outside the protections and requirements that apply to licensed businesses and can provide a gateway to wider criminality, while exposing consumers to significant risks.
The Commission will continue to work closely with police forces and other partners to identify, disrupt and take action against those operating illegal gambling businesses.
Sue Young, Gambling Commission Executive Director of Operations, said:
“Illegal gambling isn’t a victimless crime. Unlicensed operators often have links to wider criminal activity, exploit vulnerable people and undermine legitimate regulated businesses.
“This action should send a clear message – if you’re running an illegal gambling operation we will work with police and other partners to shut you down and ensure you face serious consequences.”
