In your email you have requested what the proportion of the Gambling Commission's funding is received from gambling companies each year over the past 5 years? The response should also include whether the Gambling Commission operated at a surplus or a deficit that year.

The Gambling Commission is an independent public body. We are funded in two ways:

• by application and licence fees set by the Secretary of State, approved by Parliament and paid by the gambling industry. These fees fund all gambling regulation except that for the National Lottery.
• in respect of National Lottery functions, by Grant-In-Aid (GIA) from the National Lottery Distribution Fund (this GIA is not treated as income in accordance with the Government Financial Reporting Manual.

The Gambling Commission publishes its total income from fees as part of its Annual Report and Accounts, including any surplus or deficit.

Review of the decision
