Gaming machine research programme: qualitative study into machine gamblers
| |
|
The Gambling Commission appointed GfK NOP to undertake a qualitative
study of machine gamblers. The researchers worked with
Professor Mark Griffiths of Nottingham Trent
University, carrying out interviews, observations and
focus groups with a range of machine gamblers and venue managers.
The sample of gamblers included regular, at risk and current, and
recovering problem gamblers in locations across Great
Britain.
The research explored four aspects of gambling with
participants:
- Gamblers’ play patterns, behaviours, and motivations to gamble
on machines and other gambling activities.
- Use and views of gaming machine features such as speed of play,
size of stake and prize.
- How players access gaming machines and the importance of the
gambling venue and environment.
- Players’ views on and use of a range of social responsibility
measures.
