National occupational standards and qualifications

The Gambling Commission is charged with permitting gambling, so far as this is compatible with the licensing objectives set out in the Gambling Act 2005. We consider that a well informed industry workforce is important to the safeguarding of these objectives, and so welcome the development of specific education targeted at this area of knowledge. We are not able to endorse any particular qualifications, as this is not within our remit.

However, we can provide advice and input to those developing new qualifications on specific Gambling Commission requirements (eg to confirm that a new qualification meets the requirements of the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice).

Occupational standards

In 2007, People First, the sector skills council responsible for the development of skills within the leisure industry, developed a number of occupational standards for the gambling industry. Their purpose is to provide minimum standards for those developing in-house and external training courses for their staff. A full list of the standards can be found below.

Operators will wish to ensure that the training they offer their staff meets these standards. This is applicable whether the training is provided in-house or offered by an external training provider, and whether validated by an awarding body or not.

Qualifications

The occupational standards developed can be used to form the basis for accredited qualifications for the industry. A range of qualifications are currently being developed by training providers and colleges, awarding bodies and gambling operators.

Below is a list of the training developments and courses available. This is not an exhaustive list. If you offer a gambling qualification and would like a link to appear on this page please contact us.

People First

Working within gambling legislation (one day course). We are not able to endorse any particular qualification, as this is not within our remit. However, we provided advice and input on LCCP requirements at various stages of development of the this qualification (through participation in the gambling panel that developed it).

National Gaming Academy

A consortium of three UK Further Education colleges which are working together to design and deliver training tailored to meet the needs of the gambling industry. The participating colleges include; Blackpool and the Fylde College, London Gaming College and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College.

City and Guilds

Offering level 2 and 3 NVQs in Gambling Operations.

Social responsibility standards

Two of the standards set out what is required of staff, at both management (GS3001) and operational level (GS2001), to comply with the social responsibility code provisions contained within the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice.

The social responsibility standards can be found at:

The Gambling Commission encourages operators to use these standards within its own social responsibility training programmes. In addition, when selecting an external training provider we recommend that you ask whether the training incorporates these standards.

All occupational standards are stored within the National Occupational Standards (NOS) directory.
