Bill Butler leaves the Gambling Commission
Press release
Date: 21 May
2009
Bill Butler, Corporate Services Director at the Gambling
Commission (the Commission), will be leaving in late July to take
up the role of Chief Executive at the Security Industry Authority
(SIA). Bill joined the Commission in February 2006 as
Director of Corporate Services on a fixed term contract
specifically to get the Commission up and running.
Jenny Williams, the Commission's Chief Executive, said:
"Bill was a founder member of the team that set up the Commission
and put in place the policies and practices that have got the
Commission well on the road to being a first class regulator.
While we are sorry to lose him, he always planned to move on once
we had got to this stage. I am delighted that the SIA will
now have the benefit of his experience and wish him well in his new
role".

Notes to editors
The Gambling Commission
- 1. The Gambling Commission (the Commission) regulates gambling
in the public interest. It does so by keeping crime out of
gambling, by ensuring that gambling is conducted fairly and openly,
and by protecting children and vulnerable people from being harmed
or exploited by gambling. The Commission also provides independent
advice to government on gambling in Britain.
- 2. The Commission is responsible for licensing and regulating
all gambling in Great Britain other than the National Lottery and
spread betting, which are the responsibility of the National
Lottery Commission and the Financial Services Authority (FSA)
respectively.
- 3. Prior to his time at the Gambling Commission, Bill was
finance lead on the team that established the Healthcare Commission
and subsequently Director of Finance for that organisation. He
occupied a number of senior roles at the Audit Commission,
including Director of Health and Regional Director. Bill is a
member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and
Accountancy.
- 4. The management changes announced in October 2008 anticipated
Bill Butler's departure and the post of Corporate Services Director
will cease following Bill's departure.
