Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How do I submit a licensing authority return?

Why is the information needed?

Under the Gambling Act 2005 (the Act), the Gambling Commission must provide information to the Secretary of State relating to the incidence of gambling, the manner in which gambling is carried on, the effects of gambling and the regulation of gambling. Within the framework of the Act, there is a similar obligation for licensing authorities to supply us with information so that we can fulfil our duty to advise the Secretary of State.

We also require information about gambling related compliance and enforcement to inform the ongoing development of our approach to risk based compliance activity.

Can I submit returns using the old form?

No. The new form is easy to understand and collects relevant data that will give a consistent view of local authority activity. The new form is more focused and shorter – therefore it will save you time and is more relevant to the nature of your compliance work. Alternatively, you are able to submit the data online which offers a more efficient and effective way of submitting this type of data.

What has been done with my previous information?

The information requested on last year's form allowed us to create a report which is useful to licensing authorities and the Gambling Commission. The report analyses the data we received, identifies emerging trends and allows you to compare your results with other licensing authorities.

How can I view my historical returns?

You need to log-on to the online system using your email address and password. This will take you to a menu screen. Select 'History' which will take you to a further screen detailing the dates of the previous submissions. Choose a period you wish to view, and select the 'view as PDF' option.

When can we expect to see the licensing authority returns report?

The report has been sent to all licensing authorities. It allows you to compare your authority with others across Great Britain, and highlights trends. This data is an essential source of information and can assist us in improving our work as risk-based regulators: Licensing authority statistics - April 2009 - March 2010.

What if I cannot submit the information by the required date?

Please notify us as soon as possible if this is the case by email or telephone and provide a date by which we can expect the information to be provided.
