Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What are the regulations on the use of note acceptors on Category D gaming machines (fruit machines, slot machines)?

Under the Gambling Act 2005 and associated Regulations, Category D gaming machines are only allowed to use note acceptors in the following ways.  Upon note insertion:

  • immediately provide change to the full value of the note inserted; or
  • credit the gaming machine with a maximum of £2 and immediately provide change equivalent to the remainder of the note value; or
  • credit the gaming machine with a maximum of £2.  The machine must then ask the player if they would like to credit an additional sum of up to £2 from the value of the note inserted or to pay out the remainder immediately as change.  This process can be repeated until the whole value of the note inserted is either credited to the gaming machine or is paid out as change.
