Remote pool betting operating licence

Regardless of where you are based in the world, you need a licence from us if:

  • you are providing facilities for gambling to consumers in Great Britain online (or through any other means of remote communication)
  • any part of your remote gambling equipment is based in Great Britain.

There is a remote operating licence for each type of gambling activity you might want to provide.

This licence allows you to run a pool betting business online (or through other remote communication).

In pool betting the stakes are pooled and the amount of money won by the successful customers is calculated by dividing the total pool (minus commission) by the number of winners.

Pool betting includes horseracing, football and other sports and fantasy football-type competitions.

Betfred, trading as The Tote, holds the exclusive licence (until mid-2018) to offer pool betting in respect of GB horseracing. Authorisation from The Tote is required to carry out pool betting on GB horseracing.
