Remote general betting (standard) operating licences

Regardless of where you are based in the world, you need a licence from us if:

  • you are providing facilities for gambling to consumers in Great Britain online (or through any other means of remote communication)
  • any part of your remote gambling equipment is based in Great Britain.

There is a remote operating licence for each type of gambling activity you might want to provide.

There are three types of remote general betting (standard) operating licences:

Remote general betting (standard) (real events) operating licence

Allows you to provide facilities for remote (online) gambling to consumers in Britain. This licence allows you to offer betting on real events (as opposed to virtual events) by means of remote communication (for example, a website).

If your gross gambling yield from telephone betting is £275,000 or more then you will need this licence.

Where you offer betting on both real events and virtual events you will be required to hold both licences.

Remote general betting (standard) (remote platform) operating licence

Allows you to provide facilities for remote (online) gambling to consumers in Britain. This licence allows you to use remote platforms simply to back or lay bets:

  • as part of running a betting shop (so you are also applying for a non-remote general betting (standard) operating licence)
  • as part of running an on-course bookmaking business (so you are also applying for a non-remote general betting (limited) operating licence)
  • as part of your telephone betting business (so you are also applying for the remote general betting (limited) operating licence).

The remote platform licence application is free of charge. The annual fee is £280.

But there is no charge if you also hold a non-remote general betting (standard) or non-remote general betting (limited) operating licence, or a remote general betting (limited) operating licence.

Annual fee

Your first annual fee is due 30 days after your licence is issued to you and every year on the anniversary of the day your licence was issued.

If you apply for a combination of different operating licences, you will get a discount on your annual fee.
